Short answer: yes. Flying is very safe. In fact flying is way safer than driving a car, and you do that on the daily. The chances of dying in a car crash is 1 in 107, but the chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. Every day there is around 45,000 flights a day in the United States alone, yet there hasn’t been a serious fatal crash in the US in over 15 years. Part of the reason for this is that aviation is constantly evolving and becoming safer, every time there is even the most minor of incidents, it is investigated. Once they can prove what happened, they take steps to prevent future crashes. Also, planes today are held to very high safter standards, and so are the pilots flying the plane. Planes are also more capable than people think. Most planes can fly with only half the engines they have, and all pilots are trained to be able to land a plane in an emergency situation.
How To Stay Safe
Even though flying is safe, many people still get nervous. So, I will inform you of some extra steps to stay safe.
- Pay Attention To Safety Videos, and the Flight Attendants Instructions
- Don’t put sharp objects in your pockets
- Sit in the middle or the rear of the plane
- Fly on newer produced planes
- Fly with airlines with better safety records
- Turn on airplane mode (see: Does Airplane Mode Work?)
These are all precautions, but if you are really worried, you can take this extra steps. But, if you are flying you have no reason to be worried, and should enjoy your flights.
Does Airplane Mode Work?
Airplane mode is a feature equipped on most devices. Airplane mode turns off all cellular and wireless signals. The belief is that: cellular and wireless signals can interfere with an airplanes radar system. Airplane mode can also safe your devices battery, because your phone is trying to find a cellular signal, but there isn’t one available in this area because how far you are from the ground. This constant searching can drain your battery. But, there has been no cases of a planes radar signal being interfered with by a phones cellular service. But, it is a necessary precaution taken, in case this were to ever happen.
Conclusion
Flying is very safe. There is no reason at all to be worried when in a flight. In fact you should be more worried while driving. So, enjoy your flight!
